Biomass is a sustainable alternative to current fossil fuels and the introduction of the Renewable Heat Incentive will make it more cost effective. It is also very good at providing heat requirements all year round, and unlike Solar thermal or air source heat pumps, will work in all conditions. That said, we do worry about the sustainability for growing the crops – for biomass to be grown other food crops need to be replaced. Also, the running costs and storage requirements for fuel mean that it can be an inconvenience. New boilers and burners that are coming to the market are now very efficient and modern and can suit domestic requirements to heat single rooms etc. We advise that they are used alongside other technologies to make the most out of all the systems available on the market.
