Large wind farm technologies are very developed and stable, and the most research is devoted to small turbines, especially those looking to create a small domestic, roof mounted system that will generate electricity in low wind speeds found in urban areas. Recently a company called EarthTronics, based Michigan USA, developed a wind turbine that it claims can operate at speeds as low as 2 miles an hour. This turbine is named as Honeywell Wind Turbine and will be sold for $4,500 later this year.
Elsewhere, scientists are researching ways to generate electricity from the very strong wind found high up in the atmosphere such as in the gulf stream. In this sense there is currently research looking at generating electricity from kites and other high altitude appliances.
